Bonspiel Information

The Cache Valley Stone Society is thrilled to welcome you to the inaugural “Wolfe on the Rocks” Bonspiel, held in beautiful Logan, Utah, from April 10th to 12th.

This event is dedicated to the memory of our founding member, Mike Wolfe. Mike truly exemplified the spirit of curling, and we invite you to join us for a weekend that celebrates the game, the camaraderie, and the warmth he brought to every end.

Here is everything you need to know.

Bonspiel Rules

All games take place at Eccles Ice Arena

Rules

These are the official rules for the Wolfe on the Rocks Bonspiel. You can also view them as a Google Doc.

General

  • Unless specified below, game play will be governed by the rules set forth by USA Curling.
  • All curlers, coaches, and spectators will be expected to abide by the CVSS Code of Conduct. Not abiding by the code of conduct can be grounds for expulsion from the ice or the building.
  • The winning team is responsible for using the large mop to sweep the sheet clean immediately following the match.
  • All games will abide by the Five Rock Rule. The No Tick Rule will NOT be in effect.
  • All USA Curling-approved brooms, delivery sticks, and delivery aids are allowed. Any equipment deemed to be damaging the ice can be removed from game play by officials. Corn brooms and hair brooms are only permitted as delivery aids.
  • Only players and coaches are allowed on the ice. Anyone entering the ice is expected to thoroughly clean their shoes. Game play will stop while shoes are being cleaned and the offending team sweeps the sheet.
  • All players, including substitutes, must be declared at registration before the team’s first game. No changes to the team roster will be allowed once tournament play begins.

Timing & Pace of Play

  • Matches will be eight (8) ends or 120 minutes.
  • A clock will be used — skips are expected to maintain a reasonable game pace. Please refer to the RED clock above the Zamboni entrance.

Game Start

  • A starting bell will ring at the scheduled draw time or one minute after the ice is declared ready, whichever comes second.
  • Teams will receive a one-minute grace period from the starting bell.
  • 1–14 minutes late: Game begins in the 2nd end. Non-offending team has hammer and leads 1–0.
  • 15–29 minutes late: Game begins in the 3rd end. Non-offending team has hammer and leads 2–0.
  • 30+ minutes late: Declared a forfeit.

End of Game

  • The end of the game will be signaled by a cowbell. When you hear the cowbell, finish the end you are currently playing, then play one more end.

Tie Score / Draw to the Button

  • If tied after 8 ends, the skips who skipped the last end will each throw one stone. The stone closer to the button and still in play (between the Hog Line and End Line) wins.
  • The team that scored the most recent point throws first.
  • The vice-skip will skip for their team. Sweeping is allowed; however, the vice-skip may not sweep the opponent’s stone past the T-line.
  • If a collision must be avoided, the vice-skip of the delivering team will lift the opposing stone, let the delivered stone pass, then replace it. If there is disagreement on replacement, the draw is repeated.
  • The draw to the button will be repeated if both stones end out of play.
  • Any defensive sweeping of the opponent’s stone will result in an automatic forfeit.

Game Play

  • Round robin tie-breakers will be resolved with last stone draw measurements at the end of your first game.
  • The players who start an end must remain in the same position throughout that end.
  • Three-player teams: Lead and second deliver 3 stones each; skip delivers 2.
  • Named alternates may play for a team. A substitution can only occur once during a match. If a player cannot continue and the substitution has already occurred, the match continues with 3 players.
  • Vice-skips flip a coin to determine starting hammer and color.
  • Delivery stick users must move in a straight line from the hack. A stone is considered burned if anything other than a straight line is used. The stone must be released before the hog line.
  • Vice-skips decide which stones are closer and determine the score for each end, recording scores on the scoreboard at the north end of each sheet.
  • At the end of the match, skips report scores by posting them on the bracket board.

Eccles Ice Rink Rules

  • No smoking under the canopy or inside the rink.
  • No glass on the ice.
  • No beer, alcohol, or sodas on the curling ice sheet, whatsoever!

Good Curling!
